Build up a City: Build a New Stadium

Of the more interesting reasons why a city needs a new sports stadium built is the ability to control urban growth. The idea is pretty simple: Once the current stadium reaches maturity, it is given over to the city for whatever use the leaders deem important. Meanwhile, if it is built in another part of the city, preferably one that is essentially out of the way, it encourages growth around it. This often comes in the form of small businesses, office buildings and the infrastructure to support it. Eventually, the area becomes a thriving part of the city.



Many stadiums have either a limited lifespan or will eventually revert back to the ownership of the city that helped to build them. The lifespan of a stadium is determined by a number of features, ranging from the age of the structure to its capacity. For some, simply lacking modern conveniences and the most up-to-date technology is enough to effectively call it "old," which is usually around 10 to 15 years. At this time, its capacity may be well under what it could be supporting and when it is time for new wiring. That host has a number of options at this point. As it has usually paid for a significant part of the building of the structure, the coliseum will usually revert back to city ownership and will then be used for a number of different events. It may or not be refurbished. It may even be demolished. The fate of the old building all depends on how much use the ownership or city leaders get out of it as a supplementary venue. Sometimes the area can be used more effectively. Sometimes the new stadium can be built on the same site or tract of land as the old one.



In some cases, there is the question of whether or not to move where the team plays or to simply upgrade the current one. This is often decided by whether or not the playing field can be moved. If there is a significant empty area, it is more likely to change its location.



The new structure will create a positive buzz not only for the sports team, but will increase its popularity, especially if the franchise team that plays there has been on a winning streak. Because of this popularity, businesses are likely to spring up around it, and make that new part of the city bustling. This allows cities to better use underdeveloped sections of land, and to obtain additional tax revenue. Taxes monies from that area of town will grow even as the stadium is being constructed and the area around it is also built up. In this way, a city can experience a little more life by properly placing a new stadium.
