College students seldom leave home with concern over the right footwear. After several weeks on campus, however, shoes become more notable in the daily routine. Finding the right shoes can often affect one’s ability to get to class on time, take a specific course or participate in collegiate sports. They occasionally have an impact on a student’s social life, and their absence can have serious repercussions.

Work
Having the appropriate footwear for certain majors and jobs in college is something that seldom occurs to high school students. Wearing non-slip shoes for waitressing and nursing is a foreign concept that many discover on the fly. Steel-toed boots for construction work and landscaping jobs is required. Dance, medical and laboratory science students all require special footwear for lab work and internships. Teachers and employers will usually recommend the best kind to purchase.

Sports
Students are required to wear appropriate athletic attire when playing collegiate sports. Some schools provide uniforms from head to toe; others require the students to provide their own footwear, gloves, helmets and specialty products. While these accessories are often expensive, they can be picked up from specialty shops and department stores with discount coupons or online deals.

Class
Regardless of the size of the campus, there is usually a lot of walking involved. Whether it is from a dorm room to class or from a commuter parking lot to anywhere, college campuses are spread out, and traversing them by foot is about the only way to do it. Wearing sensible shoes that don’t cause blisters is important. A solid, supportive sole without holes or protrusions is important for comfort and avoiding sore feet. Finding shoes at the local discount department store, shoe store or even drugstore is often the mission for first-time college students with sore feet from old sneakers and worn flip-flops.

Social
For some young ladies, having the right shoes means nothing until they venture off to college. They discover the world of fashion and immediately have to have the ideal pair of shoes to go with every outfit. This is a trend that many young men will never understand or experience. Finding the right pair of shoes often involves shopping online at specialty shops or department stores that offer matching shoes and outfits. Some will give out coupon codes when the footwear is added at final checkout. Another popular shoe destination for college girls is an online shoe store. They offer heels and boots, sneakers, sandals and more year round. They keep the socially fashion-conscious college student in footwear. Many online shoe stores will have online deals for styles that soon will be or are slightly out of season to make the practice more affordable.

Barefoot
While going barefoot at home, in dorms, apartments and sorority or fraternity houses is socially acceptable, it is severely frowned upon elsewhere. No shirt, no shoes, no service is a common sign in many college towns. Students are prevented from attending classes barefoot unless there is a physical reason why they cannot wear shoes. Flip-flops and sandals are generally accepted instead of bare feet, although they are inappropriate for formal occasions.
