Security is something that needs to be considered for homes across the world. With continuous changes to society, many people are unsure about ways to protect their homes. There are many different forms of security; however, knowing what is out there and how it may help the average homeowner is knowledge that everyone could use.

Location
Home location within a community is the first place to determine whether a home security system is needed. If the community is small, neighbors know each other, in many cases, they are the best line of defense. However, if everyone works and there isn't really anyone to keep an eye out, then this line of security is null and void.

Simple security systems are best sought through professional sources. There are a number of companies that are available that will visit homes to determine what is best. Through researching the city area and determining crime issues, many of these companies can help to find the solution for each home. The property grounds, entrances and exits are examined and weak points for safety are evaluated.

Most homes need only a basic security system to ward off unwanted guests. These systems are installed throughout the home. Special magnetic sensors are installed on all windows and doors. The moment one of these sensors is compromised, an alert is sent out to the company that installed the system. Their job is then to contact the local police department and the homeowner to let them know that a signal has been alerted at the home. When the police arrive they review the area, look for anything out of the ordinary, speak with the homeowner and then place a report depending on the situation.

False Alarms
It is known that some sensors can be overly sensitive and will set off the alarm system. If this happens the company that installed it needs will make necessary adjustments. Some companies have a set-up where the resident has a certain amount of time to cancel the alarm before a notification is made to the police or fire department. If they do not cancel the alarm, it will go through. If it is a false alarm, the resident will be given one or two false alarm "free passes" before they are charged for the infraction. The fee will go to either the alarm company or the emergency department that responded to the call.
