Paying for college tuition, books and other expenses can be quite costly. That's why it’s good to come up with a plan early on how to pay for college. Parents can be a great resource as it is possible they have set up a college fund in the child’s name over the years. Even if parents have a college fund set up, it is likely that it won't cover all school expenses. Before graduating from high school, it is a good idea to begin applying for scholarships right away. Usually the counseling office has postings of scholarships available. It’s important to apply to as many as possible, so as to not miss out on some helpful opportunities.

The first step to take after high school is to file for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online. This will help the college determine the student’s financial need. Once the FAFSA is complete, the individual can take a trip to the college's financial aid department. Here they can look up the student’s account and let them know what, if anything, they have been awarded, such as Pell grants, scholarships and work-study. If they are awarded work-study, the student must then find a job on campus that takes work-study funds. Student employment is also similar, but is not paid through the same source as work-study funds. This college money can then be used to pay for school expenses.

The university's scholarship office has many postings for scholarships available for students. It’s important to read the eligibility requirements and guidelines before taking the time to apply to them. The applicant should gather as many scholarship applications as possible and start applying to the ones due the soonest. Students can also apply to scholarships online using websites that gather scholarships all in one place. Other places to look for scholarships include on-campus student group buildings, local organizations, cultural centers and even local businesses.

Another place to find college money is through student loans. When this route is chosen, the student can borrow as much as is needed to finish school. These personal loans are often used to supplement any gaps in other methods, but are at low interest and affordable. There are also student loan repayment programs that will pay the student’s loan back if the recipient works in certain occupations, such as education, social work and healthcare. These might be occupations that are lacking in workers and want to reward the worker for choosing for these types of positions. Some of these programs are local, as to keep the college graduate working in the same community after graduation.
