For years, conveyors with plastic wheels were the most convenient and cost effective way to move product in warehouse and storage operations. They were inexpensive to install, and managers accepted the idea that plastic wheels and rollers would break under stress and need to be replaced frequently. The idea of adding extra carton flow tracks for the many times when one was down was accepted begrudgingly with the understanding that work would come to a standstill otherwise. Over the years, modern technology has improved the durability of roller wheels with the creation of lightweight metal parts used on gravity conveyors. Skate wheels made of aluminum, steel or other durable metals have now replaced the plastic wheel to increase efficiency in a number of ways. Metal is now more cost effective, reducing downtime with the extended life of the wheel and can be easily implemented into a company’s storage and warehouse operations.

Durability
Metal wheels are stronger and still allow for easy carton flow. Aluminum is more durable than plastic and can be used for light to medium weight products. Steel is more practical for heavy cartons. They can both be used on push-type or gravity controlled conveyor systems and spin with minimal force, depending on the weight of the product. They may cost a little bit more for initial implementation, but in the long run, they are more cost efficient due to their durability.

Conversion
Changing over from plastic to metal may sound intimidating for a manager that has never considered the idea. When armed with more information, however, it makes more sense. Rather than completely revamping the operation, the modern wheel or roller tracks can be dropped in to the preexisting set-up. The installation is faster than it used to be, since standard size and customized dimensions for gravity roller conveyors are available.

Effectiveness
While considering a changeover to metal, the company may also consider changing to rollers instead of wheels. Wheels are still effective for cartons with smooth, flat surfaces. Rollers are more efficient with odd shapes and should be used for items that frequently lag behind over wheels. Product packaging has changed over the years, and cardboard cartons are no longer the automatic choice for distribution. Many items now come in bags, buckets, baskets and barrels that do not flow smoothly over wheels. Rollers will carry them more efficiently, eliminating the stoppage time for pile-ups on the conveyor. A careful survey of inventory will help the manager choose the best material and type of gravity conveyor.
