Hot Tubs are supposed to be refreshing and relaxing. When the water is murky and not flowing in its normal routine, the problem can probably be remedied fairly easily. It may need some routine maintenance or hot tub replacement parts. Make sure that the unit is turned on and that the power is connected and working properly. If not, that could be reason enough for stagnant, murky water. Check to see if there is anything blocking the jets or water flow. If these seem to be in order, it is time for a little bit of detective work.

Chemicals
The most obvious reason water is murky and not clean and clear is because the hot tub chemicals have not been properly maintained. If the machine is due for a water change and fresh chemicals, this is a good time to take care of it. Look to see if the water is moving. If the water is moving fairly well, this is probably the culprit and the problem is solved once the water and hot tub chemicals have been changed.

Filters
Hot tub filters need to be changed on a regular basis. Just what regular means depends on what type of hot tub it is, how large it is and what type of water filtration system is used. Checking the manufacturer's instructions for the hot tub and the filter will tell the spa owner how often it needs to be rinsed or replaced. The type of water used also affects the effectiveness of the filter. Some filtration systems are more efficient than others. They type of filter used may have only one layer, while some of the newer and more innovative filters have an outer filtration and an inner filtration. Different types of media are used to achieve clean, clear water. Clean water not only feels good on the skin, it does not have particles floating in it. When the hot tub filter is long overdue for changing, the circulation pump cannot do its job properly. It labors to move the water.

Circulation Pumps
When the unit is turned on and getting power, the chemicals have been adjusted and the filters are in decent condition, investigate the spa pump. The circulation pump is what keeps the water moving. When it does not go through the spa filter and circulate throughout the tub, water is not clean and clear. It becomes murky and dark. A new circulation pump is found wherever spa replacement parts are sold. The owner needs to first verify the manufacturer, model and year it was made. Some older models may no longer be available. If this is the case, compatible circulation pumps may be used instead.

When the reason for the tub malfunction is unknown, it may be best to call in the experts. A maintenance and repair person may be able to quickly diagnose the problem so that the machine will be running at peak efficiency again soon.
