When selecting either a thyroid shield or a lead vest, it is essential to ensure that it is comfortable to wear and that it does not, in any way, restrict the worker from performing his duties. There are alternative materials that are as effective lead that are more environmentally-friendly. They may be less durable, but of often more lightweight and comfortable.
