Most people in the work force today have seen gravity conveyors, but many do not know why they are used. By definition, they are mechanical transport devices, usually made of metal frames that incorporate some form of rollers or wheels for propulsion of items between locations. They are a widely used mechanical technology. This technology is being used for industrial storage in nearly all modern manufacturing and warehouse industries.

Momentum of products being transported can be maintained by use of this kind of system. The line of products can also be halted at a variety of points by insertion of a stationary object to block progress. The line of products may then be guided to a storage place, or left upon the conveyor system for temporary storage. It is also possible to join sectors of the conveyor system to one another, or enlarge the actual length of tracks being used. It is applicable to both human assembly lines and robotic workplaces, as well.

At times when storage space is limited or unavailable, the conveyor system can be reoriented to transport in an endless loop. This avoids having to reverse an assembly line of boxes and cause a back-up of production. There are many variations that can be aligned using this kind of technology. There are nearly endless possible applications and uses for businesses today.

Where some machines have seemed to eliminate the need for workers in the production process, this is one example that actually allows workers to be safer and more efficient. This is perhaps more than a little unusual in the industrial era, even more so as the world has entered the information age. It is easy to see why, when their uses are examined.

Most are used in a variety of factory and assembly line processes throughout many industries. When products are produced in a push line, it uses pitched gravity and leveling to make the conveyor system flow. The primary benefit of this technology is to eliminate the need for heavy lifting by humans, which reduces the opportunities for injury. The need for hand trucks to move things like boxes is lessened. In turn, worker resources can be used more efficiently and productivity is increased.

One reason why gravity conveyors are so widely used is their overall usefulness. They are an ideal example of innovation in the modern era of industry from the last century, and are still being used as widely today. It is likely that they will be used even more as people enter the age of robotic technology.
